T.Whid: Hello and welcome back to week 2 of MTAA’s couch surfing at Lee Walton’s blog.

M.River: Today is Thursday May 26, 2011 and that means Cory Archangel’s solo show at the Whitney “Pro Tools” is now open to the the public.

T.Whid: So, to celebrate Cory’s show and to continue this week’s theme of deep ego surfing, we would like to take you back to the “SUMMEr oF HTML”

M.River: Yup, 2003. A heady time for music, art and handmade Hyper Text Markup Language.

T.Whid: Cory and his pals Paper Rad were about to head off a summer tour of live music and web development. MTAA somehow ended up making some “street art” for the kick off show at Team.

+++T.WHid’s photo essay on the “SUMMEr oF HTML”+++

M.River: We really have no idea how we ended making a plywood HTML sign for the show.

T.Whid: …but we do know, and have photographic proof, that M.River looks dorkier than the entire HTML crew.

M.River: Anyhoooooo…one strange thing I remember today from the show, was that Jose, the gallery owner, seemed to be having fun. I liked that he wanted to curate our letter install out front . He said the ‘M’ of the HTML was the “Coup de grâce” of the set… or something like that.

T.Whid: Yes, he seemed amused that a bunch of geeks had taken over his gallery to play spastic noise rock and to explain how to build web pages. Although he seemed to be in a general good mood, at some point, he seemed a bit down.

M.River: Maybe he wondering why he was doing a one night show for a small group of dedicated but off the radar artist and their small group of fans. Not in a bad way but more like …”dam, why do I do stuff like this?” big picture way. Maybe, he was thinking of something eles entirely. I hope, as Pro Tools kicks off at the Whitney, he will remember the SUMMEr oF HTML and think “Yup…that seems to have worked out.”

T.Whid: Yup, here is to Cory and here is to all the people who give emerging artist and art forms a chance to grow.

M.River: …and speaking of emerging art forms, please join us back here on Friday for our last day of Deep Ego Surfing Week at Lee blog.
