(Marin, California) Headlands Center for the Arts
The musical performance entitled A Friendly Game of Chess was created specifically for the Headlands Center for the Arts Salon Series.
* Two people played a game of chess.
* Surrounding them and filling the entire room were individuals and small groups with instruments.
* Each musician / group of musicians were assigned to a specific chess piece.
* Each musician / group of musicians were instructed to begin playing their instruments when their assigned piece was moved. (This was easily seen, because when a piece was moved a specific flag would also be raised to indicate its activity)
* Each musician / group of musicians would continue playing there instruments until any chess piece was captured. This would result in complete silence.
* The Friendly Game of Chess lasted about 40 minutes.
* Many instruments were used, such as pianos, a saxophone, recorders, percussion, accordions, a cello and more.
