Red Ball
2001

In this online project presented by Silent Gallery, Lee Walton placed a Red Ball in a specific location in the beautiful city of San Francisco. The location of where the Red Ball was placed was completely dependent up visitors participation.

To begin the project, visitors selected 1 of 41 districts from a map of San Francisco. The most selected was South of Market. Next, visitors participated by selecting one of 6 outlined areas in this district.

In the next round of the selection process, visitors selected a block in the South of Market disctrict. The winner by a landslide was PacBell Park. In Round 4, visitors selected one of 5 sides of the stadium. There was also the option of going "inside" the stadium. Voters overwhelming selected the "inside" the stadium option.

Getting inside of PacBell Park presented a challenge. Walton managed to find a way and took pictures of every possible place to put the Red Ball. Participants were give 54 locations to choose from. The majority selected "The Home Plate Area".

Participants were give 3 choices in the following round: In the grass area, in the dirt area, and on Home Plate. They almost unanimously agreed on placing the Red Ball on Home Plate.

The Final Round was to determine the exact location (to one square inch) where the Red Ball was to be placed. Participants clicked on a diagram of the Red Ball in the exact proportions to Home Plate. The majority of the participants selected the very tip of Home Plate.

Once again, Walton was presented with the challenge of getting inside of PacBell Park. After 3 weeks and many, many failed attempts, Walton succeeded in placing the Red Ball on the very tip of Home Plate.
