In 2013, midway through earning his MFA degree, Sherrill Roland's life changed dramatically when he was wrongfully convicted and incarcerated. Sherrill spent 10 months in prison before he was eventually exonerated. Returning to complete his MFA, he wanted to provoke conversation around issues related to incarceration, including prejudice toward those incarcerated.
To do this, Sherrill started the Jumpsuit Project, a performance in which he wore an orange jumpsuit everyday at UNCG until the day he graduated.
As a mentor and faculty of Sherrill since 2008, I continue to support his ambitious work and practice to this day.
