Challenge #5

  • Make a short 40 second film that is a portrait of a friend of peer.
  • Make it awesome so that emotes some feeling.
  • Be deliberate about your shots.
  • Use and lamps and flashlights you can find.
  • Work in interior spaces in which you have complete control over the light.

The CHALLENGE:

Use lighting as if Caravaggio was making the film. Caravaggio was a renowned Baroque artist. His dramatic use of light and shadow was a technique often referred to as chiaroscuro.

Focus on 1 or 2 of these characterstics describing the lighting in a Caravaggio painting, you can use the following list of characteristics:

  1. Single Light Source: In many of his works, there's typically a single, strong light source, often from a natural window or a candle, casting stark illumination on specific subjects or objects.

  2. Deep Shadows: Caravaggio uses deep, velvety shadows to emphasize the forms and volumes of his subjects, creating a three-dimensional effect.

  3. Dramatic Contrast: The extreme contrast between light and shadow helps to create a strong sense of drama and realism in his compositions.

  4. Selective Illumination: Caravaggio carefully chooses which parts of the scene to illuminate, often leaving background or less important elements in obscurity.

  5. Emphasis on Texture: The interplay of light and shadow accentuates textures, whether it's the folds of clothing, the sheen of metallic objects, or the softness of flesh.
