487 Golf Tees (2000, San Francisco)

In 2000, at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco.

The Process:

  • 487 golf balls were hit with a driver, each shot recorded for distance and direction.

  • A tool was created to translated this data into precise color and placement instructions for golf tees.

  • The result? 487 golf tees, meticulously arranged in a wall based on the trajectories of their corresponding shots.

The Concept:

This project transforms the chaos of chance—the unpredictable flight of a golf ball—into a structured, visual form. Each tee is a data point, a frozen moment of motion, creating an abstract yet systematic composition.
