Journey to the UNCG Library

This walk will take you to the UNCG Library and back to the Gatewood Building. Look around as you walk. What do you notice outside - are there parts of the campus you haven’t looked at before? What is the flora like? and what about the animals? Do you hear the sound of birds? Do you hear the sound of the wind? Or is it mainly traffic?

  • Leave the Gatewood Building

  • Turn right towards Spring Garden

  • On Spring Garden Street, turn left

  • Turn right at the stone monoliths, before the clock-tower, which should be on your left

  • Turn left towards the Elliott University Center - notice the blossoming trees (magnolias?)

  • Inside the EUC, go up the stairs and go around to the Information desk. Across is a sculpture by Jane South of a folded-up figure. Notice that the figure seems to be touching the glass container it’s in. Was this the artist’s intention?

  • If you’re facing the figure, go to the right, and the second passage on the right leads to the library. Take this passage (follow the signs to the library)

  • On the way, you’ll notice a wooden sculpture

  • Once you enter the library, there’s a painting to the left

  • In the middle of the lobby, look up at the hanging installation

  • Turning right: go right towards the entrance. In the next lobby, you’ll notice a large wooden head

  • There is some seating here. Take a seat, write or sketch about your experience on this walk

    • Some questions to consider: we’ve looked at art outside the context of gallery or museum spaces: do these pieces have a different impact in more “ordinary” settings. If you’ve been to the library before, did you spend time with the works of art before today?

  • On the way back, when you’re at the campus map, follow the path that cuts diagonally through the garden. There is a faded placard with identifiers for all the trees in Foust Park. Here, notice the names of the previous graduates on the bricks below.

  • Return to the Gatewood building. Pinup your sketch/notes on the wall (if you would like to do that)

Sam - Neeraj and Hediyeh’s approach to the kit itself prompted me to be as present as I could with my surroundings. As I took my designated route through campus I took time to observe the many blossoming trees spread throughout the campus. I found myself focusing on them mostly and took delight in their arrival. I thought it was a fascinating prompt for us to consider the art pieces around campus in contrast to the studio/gallery spaces. These pieces found in the student union and library can easily be missed, but now with my attention fixated on them the artistic affect stands out amongst the ordinary scenes of diligent study and hurried passerby.
Bobby - I really like how this box leads you to look at and appreciate things you might not have ever noticed. I felt great on this walk. My favorite part was seeing the art in the library that I hadn't before. It changed my usual walk of noticing practically nothing into noticing really lovely art and trees, and names on the bricks. I think that goes well with the focus on the infraordinary. The papers included were well made, the instructions were professor level and the drawn map was helpful. I like the invitation to draw a sketch of your experience and post it, because then you're reflecting on your experience and afterwards seeing the way others have experienced the walk through their sketches.
